Dear Madam,

The importance of nutrition in modern medicine, including endocrinology, cannot be overestimated. [1],[2] This realization is reflected in the scientific agenda of the recently conducted first South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies (SAFES) conference, held at Hyderabad, India, on 17 and 18 August, 2013. It was attended by nearly 450 delegates from South Asia: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The comprehensive agenda of the two-day scientific sessions, held in three parallel halls, covered a wide range of topics on nutrition.

The interfaces of nutrition, public health, and endocrinology were discussed in a lecture in the context of universal salt iodization in India. A talk on medical nutrition therapy in diabetes explored ways of improving compliance. Nutrition-related issues were also discussed in deliberations on hypoglycemia, diabetes management during Ramzan, and obesity management. The importance of nutraceuticals was highlighted in a talk on Vitamin D, and a plenary lecture presented the importance of achieving bone health in South Asia. The expanding horizons of nutraceutical science came to the high table in a session on the gut microbiome and the metabolic syndrome.

The comprehensive coverage of nutrition and nutraceuticals in the first SAFES conference is commendable.

The Scientific Committee, chaired by Dr. Subhankar Chowdhary (India) and Dr. Faruque Pathan (Bangladesh), and assisted by DR. Sujoy Ghosh (India), and Dr. Kaushik Pandit (India), deserves compliments: their efforts have brought nutrition and nutraceuticals to the endocrine center stage.
